Finding Your Reflection: Social Media
Here are some of my favorite Instagram pages I've seen, inspired by the videos I've seen of Deepica Mutyala, a Youtube beauty guru who speaks Telugu (which is how I found her). In her videos, she constantly looks for products that are 'Brown-girl friendly,' and are WoC inclusive. Soon after I started watching her videos, I found the company she started - and discovered the brown niche community of Instagram.
Tinted - An Instagram community founded by the aforementioned Deepica, it's a place for "all shades in between." It offers #tintimonials of various people sharing their experiences, and is filled with reviews of beauty products, places to see yourself, and to start conversations where people can feel safe.
BrownGirlGang - This is a page that showcases various South Asian women across the world and their accomplishments.
The Indian Feminist - An account run by two Punjabi girls, meant to highlight the obstacles that many marginalized individuals face.
BrownBadNBoujee - This page takes screenshots from their twitter to showcase different South Asian individuals.
br.wn.skin - An account meant to give more representation to women of darker skin.
emmenjaan - An artist who often depicts South Asian culture in her work.
I hope that this series can help at least one person find themselves in some form, because it took years for me to scour the internet to find anyone that looks like me. Enjoy, and if you know of any other South Asian representation that you would like me to know about or include, let me know!
